A BLOG about a DOG

New KONGS arrived

The two new KONGs I ordered arrived (already had a little red and an old large black one). Cut up some old leather for handles and will use them when working Isaac today.

We used the KONGS yesterday and they worked as well as the hose (he brought them in a little closer). The only issue is it’s tough for him run in a grab one to play tug with. They are also a little tougher to manage when I’m not using them, not as easy to hide yet access quickly.

Another day past 4:20

Isaac didn’t start howling until 6:00 AM, made it past 4:20 for the second day in a row. Not sure what was going on because he has always been waking up at 6 or 6:30. For a couple days there his clock was reset to 4:20 for some reason (420 just sparked a thought, check the link).

Now that it’s nice out I’ve been able to work him outside and he’s doing time on the treadmill each night, so maybe that’s been helping.

He goes out each night at between 11:30 and 12:30 so it’s not a bathroom issue, he’s just an morning dog like Noah and Kerry (I need a dog who does 3rd shift)

10-15 Minutes (Open field next to Jacks)

2 KONGs on leather straps (not the ones I orderd)
Warmed up with just some play (brings them in a little closer)
Eventually got to some ‘FUSS’

  • Gets the look at me, attention
  • 70%-80% Position, accuracy
  • Didn’t put him on a leash like I had planned (just walked over)
  • ‘FREE’ when in proper position (didn’t have clicker either)

Ended with some play
Crate after working
Little limp…jumped for the KONG

Indian Creek Schutzhund Club update

Sounds like I might be updating the Indian Creek Schutzhund Club website sometime in the near future. Maybe it will get more traffic than the regional website we did, we’ll see.

Upped the food intake

Jen said he could gain some weight (all you skinny commenter’s may have won) so I upped the amount of Fromm’s Surf & Turf the beast is getting. Didn’t up it as much as he’d like, I think he just wants me split the bag open and drop it on the ground.

I’m tracking the food on the Fromm Tracking page…. I haven’t weighed him lately.

Put him on the treadmill last night and got him to sleep past 4:20 AM.

Indian Creek Schutzhund Club

Made it out to the club yesterday, went as well as can be expected considering it’s been months since Isaac was there. Added more detailas under the Schutzhund Training Updates.

Trip to ICSC

OB-

Played two hose
Bill says hoses are for dogs with a lot of drive, your dog doesn’t have that drive. They land and lay there, start using balls (I ordered 2 KONGS (he has liked them in the past).

Protection-

Noise of the whip & banging on the blind put him off (did some barking, but not for the toy)
Took him awhile, but eventually he got there
Carry and hold was far better, I sucked at running in circles last time (remembered to out towards the helper)

Bill syas come out more often to start making progress, oh and he said give this dog to my kids and get another one…..

50 degrees today, snow melt, wet and sloppy
Field next to Jacks
Mostly played 2 hose, got the drive up
Tossed in a few sitz with a click & then a toss

Was focused on patter training, but am begining to wonder if that’s the right way to go??? We’ll see how it pans out

Might toss the leash on him to guide him where he needs to be instead of spending so much time luring him.

Still doesn’t bring the hose in close enough…need to start OB & tracking again on a regular basis. With his fuss he looked and made eye contact, but he had no idea where his ass should be.

50 degrees

From -2 a couple of days ago to 50 degrees Saturday! With that news I went out and picked up the poo while it was still frozen. I honestly hope that every bit of snow melts!

Also planning to make a trip to ICSC this Sunday…..about freaking time

FREAKING COLD

This cold weather and snow are killing me (and the dog)! Calling Al Gore toss a little global warming my way…..

Wicked gas!

Isaac has wicked gas for some reason, my only hope is that it’s not diarrhea honking for the right of way! Only time will tell I suppose….keep your fingers crossed.

Fur Control (winter sucks)

The cold weather we’ve been having and the Subaru (without an engine) in the garage have limited my options for brushing Isaac. Here is what I’ve come up with (just brushing him in the dog room lets all the hair sneak out under the door into the basement).

Here are my weapons of choice when battling fur. They aren’t cheap and I’ve read posts that claim they are simply #4 blades from clippers, either way they get the job DONE and are well worth the price!

These tools pull vast amounts of fur out of the pooch….the following picture isn’t an over exaggeration (I didn’t want to leave the mess to prove it).

furminator

First you need to know that my office and the dog room share a wall. Never mind that the trim hasn’t been painted (as Kerry points out weekly).

With the amount of fur I’m trying to manage (in the house)  I went out and purchased a nice Shopvac (Rigid 10 gallon) and an extra 10 feet of hose.

Since Isaac and I don’t enjoy the noise of the shopvac I leave the shop vac in my office and run the hose into the dog room along the steel I beam in the basement.

Since the hose is behind both doors I can leave it hanging there and don’t need to rethread it every time I want to do some fur sucking (far different that Van Halens Muff Diving).

Then I just flip the shopvac on, go into the dog room and start brushing. As the hair builds up on the brush I pull it off and simply hold it near the end of the hose. Occasionally I run the hose over Isaac to remove any buildup of loose hair.

When he does get a bath or if the hair is insane bad I use the dog blower and start at the ass and work my way to the head (opposite of brushing). This blows a tremendous amount of hair out (and all other particles he’s acquired) in a short period of time, though it’s a lot more difficult to manage the hair blizzard in the room when I do this. Plus it’s a pain in the butt to store because the hose on it is like 15′ long (as seen below).

Here is a quick pick of Isaac as I documented this….

Busy day for Isaac

Kerry, Noah, and Bethany took Isaac for a walk this AM. After they got home Kerry and Bethany walked on the treadmill. When they were done Isaac walked over and stood there looking at them, like hey it’s my turn now. He did 7 minutes fast on a tad of incline according to Kerry.

This afternoon Isaac got 30 minutes with the Furminator and then he got a ‘Dry Bath’ with some FURminator Waterless deShedding Shampoo and Conditioner I decided to try (wasn’t up for wrestling in the tub). It actually seemed to work rather well and didn’t take too much to get him kind of wet and massage it in. Since last week he was blown out with the dog blower (lots of particles came flying out then) it seemed to work rather well. At least Kerry claims he doesn’t smell anymore, I hadn’t noticed and aroma. The stuff didn’t have a strong perfume smell so it’s not terribly unpleasant or offensive.

He got some two hose last night since he popped his soccer ball, needs to move up to a size 5 I think.
