OB 12 Minutes field next to Jacks

  • Started with play with the KONGS, tug, close tosses, and teasing
  • Fuss in a straight line 4 or 5 times, he gets it, may not have been completely in drive
  • Made 3 right turns with him
  • Platz 4 or 5 times and a toss/tug when he completed
  • Had his leash on, but didn’t use it, he just dragged it
  • Pinch collar was on, but leash was on dead ring of Fur Saver

10-15-2009

Isaac made a trip to Indian Creek Schutzhund Club today (I went along). He is still a little put off by the new surroundings, Jen got him playing. When I got home I played with him in the field before feeding him (he’s definitely better in a place he’s comfortable with). Will try Jen’s suggestion and get him in new areas and play there.

During protection work, he was slow to get going (still no barking), and yes he still was afraid/leary of Bill until Bill drew him out. He settled in after awhile and played along. My running in circles is getting better. Need to continue to get out to the club on a weekly basis so he gets used to the new surrounding and to the helper.

10 – 15 OB in field next to Jacks

  • Pinch collar, 2 KONGs, and a leash
  • straight lines are OK (starting to understand)
  • made 3 or 4 right turns and ‘free’ instant after the turn
  • Is definitely into the KONGS
  • Made one right hand tight circle with him

Overall it’s OK wouldn’t say we’re doing excellent, but there is progress. May try without the pinch collar since I’m not using it too much (should say I’ll leave the collar on, but hook the leash on the dead ring of the fur saver)

May do some ‘look’ with the clicker and some hot dogs for a refresher and to seperate the position of fuss with the look.

10 Minutes in Back yard

  • Started by getting him going with the KONG, I should mention he always comes straight from his crate when I work him. He’s not laying on the couch watching reruns of Scooby Do
  • He was on a short lead and I put him on a pinch collar today. Wasn’t giving him corrections as much as getting him into position (luring isn’t working 100% of the time).
  • Short straight lines with variable speed, KONG still out where he can see it, and minimal adjustments with the lead.
  • Released him when he was ‘correct’, kept it short today (may have been going to long before). I think he is slowly beginning to understand I walk here and look up the fat man throws the KONG.

I think it went better today, he is really interested in the KONGS and he is beginning to understand what is expected. Even when Thomas came out and barked at him he didn’t lose his focus (unlike indoor training at the club last weekend when he sniffed around where people had dropped coffee cake).

OB 10-15 minutes Backyard

  • He came straight from kennel and was wound for sound, started with a little 2 KONG (Bill was right, he gets going for the KONGS).
  • Did some Fuss releasing him when he was in position
  • Was off leash with clicker
  • Position & Attention was 100% for very short periods
  • Only say Fuss when he’s in proper position
  • Though he’s there occasionally I’m not sure he get it yet 100%, still all luring into position.
  • Fur saver tough to work with, may try a pinch collar, not for corrections but just to guide him into position

OB 10 – 15 minutes Open field next to Jacks

Worked on FUSS with a leash a clicker and two KONGS
He likes the KONGS (no difference than with hoses)
Used the leash to keep him a little better in position (no corrections)

Probably went a little to long, because eye contact started to drop off

New KONGS arrived

The two new KONGs I ordered arrived (already had a little red and an old large black one). Cut up some old leather for handles and will use them when working Isaac today.

We used the KONGS yesterday and they worked as well as the hose (he brought them in a little closer). The only issue is it’s tough for him run in a grab one to play tug with. They are also a little tougher to manage when I’m not using them, not as easy to hide yet access quickly.

10-15 Minutes (Open field next to Jacks)

2 KONGs on leather straps (not the ones I orderd)
Warmed up with just some play (brings them in a little closer)
Eventually got to some ‘FUSS’

  • Gets the look at me, attention
  • 70%-80% Position, accuracy
  • Didn’t put him on a leash like I had planned (just walked over)
  • ‘FREE’ when in proper position (didn’t have clicker either)

Ended with some play
Crate after working
Little limp…jumped for the KONG

Trip to ICSC

OB-

Played two hose
Bill says hoses are for dogs with a lot of drive, your dog doesn’t have that drive. They land and lay there, start using balls (I ordered 2 KONGS (he has liked them in the past).

Protection-

Noise of the whip & banging on the blind put him off (did some barking, but not for the toy)
Took him awhile, but eventually he got there
Carry and hold was far better, I sucked at running in circles last time (remembered to out towards the helper)

Bill syas come out more often to start making progress, oh and he said give this dog to my kids and get another one…..

2-7-2009

50 degrees today, snow melt, wet and sloppy
Field next to Jacks
Mostly played 2 hose, got the drive up
Tossed in a few sitz with a click & then a toss

Was focused on patter training, but am begining to wonder if that’s the right way to go??? We’ll see how it pans out

Might toss the leash on him to guide him where he needs to be instead of spending so much time luring him.

Still doesn’t bring the hose in close enough…need to start OB & tracking again on a regular basis. With his fuss he looked and made eye contact, but he had no idea where his ass should be.

Pathetic

Training has become pathetic these days (busy with the holidays, illness, snow, and whicked cold weather). I’m a slacker and Isaac doesn’t seem to mind.

11-9-2008 Training

No OB training today, made the trip to ICSC. Isaac only participated in puppy bite work, did better than last week, I did a little better than last week. Pops not pulls…run in circles (seems to be a skill).

11-08-2008 Training

No work (just play and rest)

11-7-2008 Training

15 Minutes (first cold day….need gloves)

More of the same Fuss and Sitz at attention with hot-dogs…forgot to take the clicker (ooops). Isaac is definately catching on to what is going on when we go to the field.

Did one pass up and back on the center line not using food to lure, but instead held his attention with the hoses. I decided to do this because he was on fire for the hoses and figured it couldn’t hurt. Though he is a touch inconsistent in bringing them all the way back in (sometime all the way other times drops while running in). He always comes straight back in, seems the faster he comes in the more likely he is to drop the hose.

He is definately paying attention on the field when we are working or playing two hose. No longer dropping his head or casting it around. Doesn’t care that there is goose poop on the ground. We’ll see how this week at Indian Creek goes (last week he was investigating more than anything else, lots of sniffing).

Things are shaping up for me as well. I’m walking in a more proper position (head up/looking forward), feeding/luring better, and my timing is getting much better. More of a pain to get myself in order than the stinking dog.

11-6-2008 Training

Day off, no work (just play and rest).

Measure Achievements against goals: 11-5-2008

Just took a picture rather than transcribing:

11-5-2008 Training

15 minutes

Sitz in position with attention (hot dog and clicker)
Fuss up and down center line
Breaks with two hose
Few pivots at the end with him sitting in position (luring as moving)

11-4-2008 Training

Actually got up at 6:30 & was on the field by 7:00 AM this morning. Isaac was like what the hell are we doing out this early, I should still be resting. We’ll see how long I can keep the early morning crap up….there are lights on the skeet field at the gun club so there is an option.

15 minutes

Sitz in position on left with attention (hot dogs & clicker)
Fuss up and down field with right turns (hot dogs & clicker)
Two hose breaks every so often

No stomach issues from yesterdays hot dogs

Still losing his attention (head drops) on occassion, but not as much as a week ago. Feeding is getting much smoother (more fluid). The hot dogs are definately easier than the kibble.

——————————

10 minutes after work

Sitz in position on left with attention (hot dogs & clicker) made him really wait and look
Fuss up and down field with right turns (hot dogs & clicker)
Two hose breaks every so often (bringing them in closer)
Did a few pivots to make him simply shift to show him success in the position (luring with hot dogs going better)
Head still dropping, but not nearly as much, will just keep rewarding him for an UP head
Used the clicker again this evening (easier now that I’m getting better with luring and giving him the food and the clicker seems to really help)
It’s’ all in the timing and coordination, which I was lacking and am still focusing on

Still produced solid stool after 3 sessions with 1 sliced hot dog per session (and he stole some rib meat that Stella had today)

11-3-2008 Training

10 or 15 minutes

Sitz in position with attention feeding him (couple of different times after releasing him)
Fuss up & down the center line with right runs feeding him (right turns, he’s speeding around them might be starting to forge a little too much.
Two hose breaks every so often (bad habit of not bringing them back all the way)
Used hot dogs for food & it went MUCH smoother, was able to feed him more accurately & he was able to eat them much faster. Also he wasn’t taking my fingers off like when he was younger.
He seems to be dropping his head more (looking for food, goose shit, rabbit poo, or because he and I were  both dropping kibble before (maybe the hot dogs will help that, he was also more drivey for the hot dogs)

He jumped for a hose right as I tossed it and kind of jammed himself when bounced of my chest/right side rib cage/arm pit and slid sideways upon landing. He seemed fine when he got up, but I need to focus on keeping him on the ground for now…he’s still goofy with those long legs and not terribly agile.

Overall today was the best day in awhile with regards to attention, food, excitement, and accuracy. If his stomach holds out I think hot dogs with 2 hose breaks will be the combination for the week. Wonder if he’ll eat tofu?

11-2-2008 Traing

Was at ICSC and didn’t do anything separate

Call him when he grabs the ball/hose/toy (keep it going so he doesn’t have time to get distracted).
Always out towards the helper
