Training Plan
I have been less than diligent with scheduled training in regards to Schutzhund. Time to get back on track now that the stomach issues have settled down and we’ve made some real progress with two hose and other forms of play/reward.
I’ve created a new category that I will use to keep track of ‘actual’ training related posts.
At 7 months I took an inventory of where I was with Isaac’s training, here is what I put in his training log (yes I have a training log):
At 7 Months of age Isaac has
- Been socialized (dogs/people etc), nice open social dog been to many events in many environments
- Adjusted to life with Noah and Bethany (still careful as he becomes sexually mature)
- Still hesitant of lawnmower (a lot better). Shotgun and Pistol don’t bother him at gun club.
- Imprinted Tracking
- Basic Obedience (started)
- Basic manners
- Developed prey drive (more my learning than his)
- Solid food drive
- 99.9% pure positive to this point
- E-collar for rabbit poop (was the last resort and only vibrate no electrical stimulation was needed)
- Crate and kennel trained (house broken)….NO FREE ACCESS to house
- Adult teeth all in
- Stomach seems OK on kibble & water
- Will play 2 hose very well (getting pushy and vocal NICE)
Isaac has been coming along quite well. Was spending a lot more time with him when he was younger (tracking and OB) but have slowed down because of:
- Stomach issues
- Teething (maybe related to #1)
- Puppy stuff attention/bond
- Develop prey drive (again mostly me)
- Limp – Pano? Joint Strong Supplement/Rest and tried to slow down his jumping (not easy)
- Determined it was time to get back on track with a plan (execution)
He has the food drive and we’ve developed the prey drive. Always has been willing to work for food, and is beginning to be willing to work for hose.
When I stopped tracking his only issue was moving to fast down the track (he loves his food). Spent more time on tracking than OB when he was younger.
If Jen is the bar for puppy development he’s behind, but I think the bond is there, drive is there, now it’s just a commitment to and execution of the plan. He should be old enough now that I can hold his attention better and has the ability to be put in drive (I’m not a puppy or a baby guy, 7 month old dogs and 5 or 6 year old kids is more my speed). I also know him enough to know how to communicate with him or at least read him. He doesn’t seem hard or dominant. Pack drive is strong (he’s attached to his family), prey drive is solid, but not insane, food drive is close to insane (he not a great white shark, but more of a polar bear). Fight and play drive are there as well.
That’s the inventory of where we are with training, now it’s identify goals, identify gaps, execute to close gaps and repeat. Greatest gap is now that it gets dark early I need to start getting up and working him in the morning (SUCKS). That’s probably the biggest gap, again my issue not the dogs.
